Action Surrey launch website to save energy

ThamesWey Sustainable Communities project, Action Surrey, has just launched a new website to help local residents and organisations stay warm, reduce their energy costs, and reduce their environmental impact.

As the county’s leading provider of energy saving advice, we are using the site to help people access approved contractors for energy saving property improvements such as wall or loft insulation, new boilers, solar panels and more.

When you enquire you will get access to your own unique profile tracking your installations, as well as giving you an insight into further actions you could take to save energy. The website will also feature an interactive blog for people to share their thoughts on anything from how they stay warm at home, to wider sustainability and energy issues that they wish to discuss.

John Scott, who helped to develop the website, said that “we think this is a great resource for local people to take positive action to improve their home and environment, and to share ideas and thoughts on how they want to do this”.

The new site is now live at actionsurrey.org. For more information email info@actionsurrey.org or call 0800 783 2503.

ThamesWey £10k grant for a new church boiler

Last month, through a £10,000 grant from ThamesWey’s Action Surrey project, St Mary of Bethany Church in Woking were able to replace their broken old boiler with a brand new efficient model. This will help make the church warmer and cheaper to run, as well as reducing their impact on the environment.

Watch the video to hear their vicar Steve Beak talking about the effect of the new boiler, and the process they went through with us to get it.

ThamesWey run free energy education workshops

ThamesWey Sustainable Communities has been delivering free educational workshops throughout the summer through the Low Carbon Communities project, to Woking’s youth groups, teaching them about how we use energy; how it’s made and how different types of energy generation affect the environment.

Woking Scouts Workshops

These fun and interactive sessions have been well received by children and group leaders alike. Hilary Harris, Akela for 1st Goldsworth Park Cub Pack said of a session last week:

“Thank you for your time and enthusiasm at our Cub Pack meeting last week, the Cubs enjoyed learning about Energy Awareness and found it fun looking at the thermal image camera.”

The sessions lasted about an hour and included plenty of games and activities, providing a vital learning opportunity to the children to help them understand the importance of energy in their daily lives, and what they can do to improve the way they make and use it.

Surrey Prepared – flooding & emergency advice for Surrey residents

Surrey County Council has worked with partners to launch the Surrey Community Resilience Partnership. The partnership will help communities build resilience and protect homes under the Surrey Prepared initiative.

They have produced a booklet of tips and advice to help Surrey residents prepare for flooding and stay safe.

Unfortunately flooding can and does happen in Surrey – in 2013 the army were called in to help after a national incident was declared. That’s why we’ve put together these tips and pieces of advice to help you prepare for flooding and also cope as well as possible if it happens.

You can download your be prepared for flooding guide here

They have also designed a short guide on how to be prepared for local emergencies, encouraging household resilience.

Surrey Prepared is also all about stronger communities and encouraging people to work together to plan and prepare for potential emergencies. We call this ‘community resilience’, and any individual or group can be part of it. All you need to do is:

  • Check if a local group already has a plan – parish councils and residents associations often do.
  • If so, join up with them
  • If not, start your own with willing volunteers.
  • Complete a Community Emergency Plan (DOC)
