In response to the growing evidence and heightened public concern regarding the negative environmental impacts of single-use plastics, work is underway to identify alternatives to single-use plastic takeaway containers and cutlery.

Each of the Market Walk stall holders selling takeaway lunches and drinks have pledged support to reduce their use of single-use plastics. The work to date has focused on promoting the switch to reusable containers as part of the first step in the waste hierarchy. Discounts are even available on several of the meals for customer who bring their own container.

The Market Walk stall holders selling takeaway food and drinks who encourage customers to bring their own container and the discounts available are:

  • Bacareto, Italian street food – offer a 10% discount to customers who bring their own container. Bacareto also uses wooden cutlery in place of plastic.
  • Bep Viet, Vietnamese cuisine – offer 30p off meals to customers who bring their own container. Bep Viet also offers a dine-in option which uses ceramic bowls.
  • Dr Olive – would like to encourage customers to bring their own container for filling.
  • Foy African cuisine – either bring your own container or reuse the container they provide as this helps ensure portion sizes are consistent.
  • Limpopo Biltong – uses paper bags in place of plastic but to help cut down on waste would like to encourage customers to bring their own container & shopping bag.
  • Q’s Spice, Asian cuisine – either bring your own container or reuse the container they provide as this helps ensure portion sizes are consistent.
  • Shin’s Sushi & Bibimbap Café, Korean & Japanese cuisines – offer 30p off meals to customers who bring their own container or reuse one of their bowls. Shin’s are also looking to trial more sustainable pulp packaging.
  • Taylor’s Coffee House – offer a 10% discount to customers who bring their own cups. Alternatively, customers can sit in and enjoy their coffee in a glass cup.
