SuperHomes are older homes that have been refurbished for greater comfort, lower bills and reduced emissions (at least 60% less). Joining a tour will give you actionable ideas for greening your own home. Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and post-war houses are amongst the 65 renovated homes open to the public. Most have superior insulation; many have alternative heating sources and some produce their own energy. It is easy to find a SuperHome with a particular green technology installed using the website.

Woking Borough Council plans to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on to many of its buildings as a major step towards reducing the carbon emissions from energy use in the council’s housing stock and public buildings.

The project will also take advantage of the Government backed ‘Feed-In Tariff’ (FIT) funding for renewable energy which was introduced in April 2010. The scheme will provide the Council with new income for the next 25 years from both the Feed in Tariff and through the sale of any surplus electricity back to the national grid.

John Thorp, Managing Director of Thameswey, said: “Woking Borough Council plans to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on to many of its buildings as a major step towards reducing the carbon emissions from energy use in the council’s housing stock and public buildings.

“The buildings where the solar PV will be installed will all benefit from reduced energy costs.

“We anticipate that once installed, the PV panels will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 600 tonnes per year and the project will provide the Council with an income of approximately £44,000 per annum. In addition there will be an initial annual saving of over £11,000 to the Council’s electricity bills which will increase over time as electricity prices rise. This additional income will help the Council to protect services for Woking residents.”
