The Mayor of Woking, Cllr Christina Liddington popped in for a celebratory cup of tea at Oak Tree House in Knaphill on Tuesday (8 September 2009) to formally open Woking’s first fully kitted out, low carbon home.

Over the last two years, Oak Tree House in Knaphill has been transformed from an ordinary three-bedroom detached house into a showcase for energy efficiency, renewable technology and water saving improvements.

Working with its energy company, Thameswey Energy, building partner, Mansell Plc, and environmental partner, Woking LA21, Woking Borough Council has created a demonstration home and garden for others to view and identify which measures they could adopt in their own homes.

Oak Tree House is a key part of a larger programme called the Woking Low Carbon Community which initially aims to help around 1,000 local homeowners to transform their properties into low carbon homes.

Tours of Oak Tree House can now be arranged via Thameswey Energy. Individuals who would like to pay the house a visit are encouraged to call 0800 783 2503 or pop in to the low carbon advice centre in Commercial Way when it opens later in the autumn (please see local press for details).

Decent and affordable Housing is one of Woking Borough Council’s top priorities. Woking Borough Homes, a subsidiary of the Thameswey Group owned by Woking Borough Council, is developing a small estate at Brookwood Farm consisting of ten semi-detached homes, six with three bedrooms and four with two-bedroom and two detached 5-bedroom homes.

These homes are being built to meet at least Level 5, with an ambition for Level 6, of the Code for Sustainable Homes. The semi detached homes will be available for rent through the Council’s Hometrak system early next year whilst the 5 bedroom houses will be placed on the open market either for sale or rental.

The homes will feature improved insulation, air-tightness and renewable energy. The homes will also be connected to a private wire electricity system owned by Thameswey Energy, this will provide electricity from the combined heat and power (CHP) systems located in Woking. The homes at Brookwood Farm are being built to at least Code Level 5 and include the following;-

rainwater harvesting built in, so that money can be saved on the use of water for washing clothes, watering the garden and the flushing of toilets;

high insulation value wall and floor materials;

triple glazed windows;

heat recovery from hot air leaving the house;

the two and three bedroom homes have photovoltaic roof tiles to generate electricity from the sun

the five bedroom homes have photovoltaic roof tiles and hot water heating by solar thermal tiles.

The Council maintains a Housing Register, and anyone aged over sixteen who is eligible may apply to join the register and will then have access to the Hometrak system. To be able to use the Hometrak system you must apply to be included in the Council’s Housing Register.

Once registered you can express your interest in the properties available to rent in the Borough, including in due course the new homes at Brookwood Farm, in the following ways:

On line through the Hometrak Woking website.

Through the Council’s Hometrak telephone service on 01483 755855.

By calling into the Civic Offices.

Using a Hometrak Woking Kiosk. There are a number of kiosks in key locations around the Borough such as The Vyne (Knaphill), Moorcroft (Westfield), St Marys (Byfleet), The Lightbox, Salvation Army Centre Sythwood and the Civic Offices.

For more information about registering for a home please visit the Council Web Site www.woking.gov.uk/housing/options/register or make an appointment to meet one of the Council’s Housing Options team by calling 01483 755855.
